We are a group of academics, activists and concerned citizens who have come together in protest against the recent tactics of the UK Home Office against migrants.
In July 2013 the Home Office commissioned adverts reading ‘In the UK illegally? Go home or face arrest’ and drove them around several areas of London with large ethnic minority populations. This was followed by intensification of immigration raids, targeting tube stations in poor, mixed urban areas, which according to Doreen Lawrence and eyewitness accounts have involved racial profiling. Meanwhile, the Home Office Twitter feed intensified its Orwellian-sounding immigration stance, reporting the arrest of suspected visa over-stayers, publishing the photographs of arrests and naming them as “immigration offenders”.
We believe that such activities manipulate and inflame public anxieties about immigration that are already being exploited by extremist groups. At their worst, they incite racism and intolerance within our communities. They reverse the progress that has been made by current and previous generations to address these very issues. We believe that such tactics harm us all. We are doing what we can to counter them.
